SNAP Households Survey -
November Results

Providers (formerly Fresh EBT) is a free mobile app that helps over 5 million low-income families manage their SNAP benefits. To understand how the circumstances in the lives of Providers users are changing, we have been conducting surveys each month.

November 2021 key findings

The following insights come from a 10-minute multiple choice and open response survey conducted by Providers to a random sample of 6,853 of over 5 million Providers users from November 1 - November 14, 2021. All respondents are EBT cardholders.

More users than ever are losing jobs while unemployment benefits are reaching less people than ever

More users than ever are reporting losing a job but few are receiving unemployment benefits

of Black users and 15% of Latinx users reporting losing or quitting a job in the past 30 days

45% of those who previously received unemployment are still looking for work

Since my unemployment ended, I haven't been able to find a job .I haven’t been able to find childcare to allow me to work. I have been struggling to pay my bills. The CTC has really helped me to stay current with a couple of my bills at least.

October CTC payment again reduced housing, food, and financial insecurity

Families that received the October CTC payment were 
more likely to:

  • live in stable housing;

  • pay rent on time;

  • pay their utility bills in full; and

  • have most things they need at home.

They were also less likely to

  • have spent a night in a shelter;

  • have skipped meals; and

  • have less than $25 on hand.

How has the Child Tax Credit affected your family?

I was in my low fuel light and couldn’t make it to work until the ctc came then I was able to gas up and go to work.

Black respondents were more likely to be evicted and spend a night in a shelter than white respondents

Portion of users reporting having less than $25 on hand has been steadily rising since April, reaching highest point this year

Over 59% of users have less than $25 on hand

Those that have less than $25 on hand has been steadily increasing since April. It reached the highest level this year--59%, which is comparable to the all-time high seen last winter.
